Heralded as one of the most enchanting displays of art and sculpture, with pieces that individually comment on their environment, the Harbourview Sculpture Trail, Te Atatu Peninsula, is set to open to the public this weekend, Saturday 8 March.
The Trail displays pieces by fifty of New Zealand’s most talented, established and up-and-coming artists, with most of the exclusive art installations available for purchase.
MP for Te Atatu Phil Twyford said “The Harbourview Sculpture Trail is shaping up as a superb event in Auckland’s art calendar, with wonderful public art against a backdrop of Te Atatu Peninsula’s harbour-side setting.”
Harbourview Sculpture Trail Curator, Sally Lush, said “The trail is looking spectacular with each artist having taken an incredible amount of time and consideration in understanding the Te Atatu Peninsula environment.”
“The Harbourview Sculpture Trail is a journey of discovery, around the beautiful Danica ponds with its backdrop of salt marshes and stunning views of the Waitemata Harbour, Auckland CBD and Harbour Bridge. Showcasing a wide range of sculpture, the trail offers visitors an opportunity to view our natural environment differently, with some pieces of art addressing social and political issues of Te Atatu and the wider Auckland area.”
Lush said artists have used a broad mix of materials to create their installations including glass, caste iron, plastic, wood and steel.
The exhibition includes onsite kids activities including a ‘Creation Station’ hosted by Lopdell House Gallery – Art in a Box, a ‘Peninsula Beats’ evening presented by The Luscious Food Store, and a People’s Choice Award for the most popular sculpture, as voted by the public. Curated Tours will run each Friday and Saturday at 11am and 2pm, for the duration of the Trail.
Weekend bike hire is also available onsite, courtesy of Adventure Capital, for visitors interested in exploring the beautiful pathways around Te Atatu Peninsula, after walking the Trail.
The Harbourview Sculpture Trail, hosted by charitable organisation Peninsula Arts Inc, runs from 8th – 30th March 2014 and is open daily from 10am – 6pm.
